About Meteora Protected Area

Located in the Thessaly region of central Greece, Meteora Protected Area is famed for its dramatic vertical rock pillars fashioned by natural geological processes over millions of years. The area covers numerous sandstone and conglomerate rock formations, reaching heights of up to 400 meters. Interspersed among these towering cliffs are the centuries-old monasteries, some dating back to the 14th century, perched on the summits and once accessed only by ropes and ladders. The protected zone includes both the geological features and the rich cultural heritage of these Eastern Orthodox monasteries, many of which remain active today and are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The biodiversity in Meteora encompasses a range of Mediterranean flora and fauna, including oak and pine forests, and a habitat for birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 20 established hiking and climbing routes, offering vistas of the Peneus River valley and the surrounding mountains. Key recreational activities include rock climbing on some of Europe's highest sandstone pillars, walking through scenic trails that connect monasteries, as well as wildlife observation and photography. The area’s unique topography combined with its historical religious significance attracts visitors from all over the world seeking both adventure and spiritual enrichment. Meteora presents an exceptional example of the interplay between natural landscapes and human culture across centuries, preserved under national and international protections.
